How to Clean Automotive Upholstery
A car is your pride and joy – yet if it is neglected, it looks like a dilapidated house. Drooling pets, candy eating kids, accidental spills etc. contribute greatly towards damaging car upholstery. If you don’t take care of the problem, certain stains can leave permanent or long-lasting marks in the interior. Moreover, a car in such a messy and beaten state will not garner much value during trade-in or selling.
Here are a few tips to clean automotive upholstery by Len Stoler Lexus
Coffee stains should be diluted and bottled with cool water and paper towels respectively. If the stain doesn’t go out, spray glass cleaner, wait for 5 minutes, and blot again. Glass cleaners are quite effective and don’t leave soapy residue.
Ink stains on the carpeting or upholstery can be lifted via hairspray – it should sit till the stain is absorbed properly.
Grease stains are a tough cookie – you need to use paint thinner and rub it with a clean, cotton cloth. Cover the stain with salt to absorb the remaining grease and vacuum thoroughly. Don’t use too much thinner – use in moderate amounts after testing its effecting on the colorfastness of the area in a discrete spot.
Vinyl seats can be cleaned with baking soda and a wet rag – use dishwashing detergent and water for rinsing. Oil-based cleaners shouldn’t be used on vinyl as it might harden.
Alcohol spills is yet another common issue – if someone was drinking in the car or the bottle has accidentally spilled on your way home from the store, dilute the stains with cold water right away or else they might affect the color in that particular area.
At times, a few items at the back of the vehicle might leave indentations in the carpeting – put a damp towel on them and press slightly with an iron (low setting). Don’t leave the iron on for too long because fibers can melt or get charred.
Both adults and children can feel carsick, causing vomit stains – dilute and neutralize with baking soda & water, since vomit is acidic.
Miscellaneous stains on the carpet and upholstery can be tackled with a mixture comprising a gallon of hot water, a cup of white vinegar, and dish detergent. Blend the mixture into the fibers with a hard bristle brush and let it sit for half and hour. Blot it well with towels.
Follow these pointers and keep your car interiors in good shape at all times!
