When it comes to getting your baby onto real foods, whether solids or puree, it can be both an exciting and daunting time. Everybody does it differently, but there is a degree of leniency that you need – especially when considering behaviours from other people.
There Will Always Be Somebody Who Knows Best
Whether it’s your mother-in-law, your own mother, another mother at a baby group or some random on the internet – we all think that we know what’s best when it comes to our babies. Don’t be afraid to listen to your own instincts and put those before any other words of wisdom that you receive. You should follow the official guidelines given to you by your midwife or a healthcare professional, but after that it’s all up to you. There is so much advice available online that it is hard to know where to start, but don’t feel bad about what you are doing – it could just be that the person that you are speaking to has never known any different to what they are doing, or that they personally just don’t like the foods that you are feeding your child. There may be a day that you are passing on your own advice from your experiences; while it’s good to listen to those who have gone through it, it’s also okay to have your own voice and view on the matter.
Do Whatever Suits Your Lifestyle
There are some who like baby-led weaning, some who adore spoon-feeding, others who swear by breastfeeding up until the baby’s first birthday and those who bottle feed until they know that their baby is ready. At the end of the day, everybody’s lifestyle is different. It could be jobs, personal life or other circumstances that affect how you run your day, which makes it so different from everybody and anybody else. If you know that a pouch of Happy Tot food will make your day run more smoothly, then buy it. If you would rather make your own food and take it with you, do that instead. It’s all about what feels best for you and suits both yours and your baby’s lifestyle – not anybody else’s.
It’s Not As Long As You Think
As much as it seems that it’s been forever since you started and will be forever before you’re not having to clean up the mess left by babies exploring their food, the time goes quicker than you think. It’s hard to treasure a time that required more preparation, tidying and wastage than you’ve ever experienced before, but it is such a magical time for your baby. They are getting used to new tastes and textures, and at the very least this provides an amazing chance for a great photo opportunity. This is a time where their personality really begins to develop and your find out their likes and dislikes. They may just surprise you with what they turn out to love and what they turn out to loathe. They are mini humans after all; we all have our favourites!
